Spooky Halloween Food Passing Story – My Dear Late Lamented Friend

Supplies:
a. Two Olives for eyes
b. Wire Frames from old glasses (optional)
c. Cooked cold spaghetti or lasagna – intestines
d. Cold oiled dirty plastic for skin
e. Un-Popped Popcorn (10-15) for teeth
f. Dried apricot for ear
g. Cold oiled fur or corn silk for hair
h. Cold wet Tofu, round sponge, boiled cauliflower for brains
i. Glove with wet sand. Drape over bowl, and freeze for hands
j. Have plastic bowls prepared with each item.
Last – Hand out paper towels prior to the reading so kids can wipe their hands during the reading.

My Dear Lamented Friend Set Up and Poem
Have all the kids sit in a circle with the “narrator”. Turn out the lights. Narrator reads scary Halloween story with a flashlight shining on their face only, then as you start reading begin passing around the body parts that correlates with that part of the story. FYI – It helps to have the items lined up in proper order and have an assistant ready before the lights go out.

Here lies John, my dear late lamented friend.
I know he wished he could be here before the end.
John was a fun man, a giving man too.
He wanted to share his body parts with you.

John was a jolly man with a great big gut.
Let’s pass around his intestines, just your luck!
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Twisted and shriveled in a bunch
Just like they were after his lunch.
(Pass cold cooked spaghetti)

His skin was fair, almost pure white
Let’s pass around a piece, no need to fright.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Pretty greasy and dirty, he lived in a cave.
Never really had time to ever bathe.
(Pass oily dirty plastic)

One eyeball went left, the other went right.
See poor John had very bad sight.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Handle them gently as they roll
John wouldn’t like it if they fell from the bowl.
(Pass 2 olives and spectacles)

Now John wasn’t a very smart man.
We found his brains stuffed in a can.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
You’ll feel there isn’t much to them
Shows the kind of man he’d been.
(Pass cold wet sponge)

Now one thing John wasn’t was bald
He had a nice head of hair I’m told
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Just nice and fuzzy to the touch
I said he had some, but just not that much.
(Pass damp oily fur)

One thing John was proud of was his pearly whites
A good set of choppers kept him fed right.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
See his teeth were strong unlike his sight
Just be careful when you touch that they don’t bite
(Pass un popped popcorn)

Just like Vangough, he only had one ear
He always heard just fine, and perfectly clear.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
A little shriveled because of its age
But an ear nonetheless, it says on this page.
(pass dried apricot)

The last thing we found, was Johns strong hands
They were down deep, covered with sand.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Cold and stiff as they were when he died.
Go ahead, shake one, or you’ll think that I lied.
(pass sand filled frozen gloves)

With all his pieces back safe and sound.
Time to put him back into the ground.
So now you’ve met my dear lamented friend
That brings this haunting to an end.

The body parts Halloween story is such a great tradition and the first time you experience it as a kid, you’ll never forget. The gross body parts as they are passed seem so real and your mind tries to determine whether it is worth it to even place your hand in the bowl. It all seems so gross.
